The Story

Chuck Palmer tells the story of The Wave, six months after a 2,000 ft. tsunami strikes the Hawaiian Islands, Chuck Palmer gets a call from his old Navy Seal buddy Professor Scott Richardson. Scott has been researching the cause of the mysterious wave. He has made arrangements to descend in a deep submersible to the ocean floor to investigate an underwater landslide, and he invites Chuck to join him. Chuck owns a fitness center in Malibu, is recently married, the father of a three month old daughter, and he is restless. Chuck’s wife, Lauren, is not happy about him leaving on such short notice. An argument ensues and Lauren lets slip that she tricked Chuck into getting her pregnant. Furious over the deception, Chuck leaves for Hawaii.

He arrives in Honolulu and discovers that his old friend has made some enemies. Everyone from the governor down to the pimps and prostitutes on Kalakaua Street are trying to stop Scott from completing his investigation, even if it means murder. The politicians fear another tsunami threat will destroy the economy and tourism. The natives are unhappy because they fear interference will incur the wrath of Pele, fire goddess of volcanoes. Chuck and Scott banter and joke their way through one near catastrophe after another. Chuck finds it less and less amusing as he realizes the importance of his family and the real consequences of the death-defying events Scott cavalierly thrusts on him.

Despite the governor and his henchmen’s efforts, Chuck and Scott make it down to the bottom of the ocean in the tiny submersible Pisces V. Just as they think they have found the cause of the tsunami 6,000 feet under water, an earthquake entraps their sub. Barely escaping, Chuck and Scott understand that the last tsunami was a minor ripple compared to what they have just discovered. An ever-widening crevasse reveals that Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world is about to erupt and then catastrophically collapse. The subsequent landslides will be so horrendous they will cause waves of unimaginable proportions. Every city in the Pacific basin will be destroyed. Millions will die. Worse the incredible eruption will spew vast quantities of ash into the atmosphere and cause a mass extinction event similar to the one that killed the dinosaurs.
