Biarritz, San Sebastian and the Gastro Gymnastics

I made it back to Rabelo despite my stomachs insistence on completing an evening workout. My internal organs performed an Olympic gymnastics routine on the way home, and received a score of 9.6. That night the god of the water closet and I spent many hours together, and became closest of friends. In fact I put in so many hours working on our relationship there wasn’t time to sleep.

The following morning I boarded the plane dreary ...

Am I Going To Jail In France?

No matter where you are, but especially in a foreign country, the last thing you want is a call from the police.  Lisa proceeded to hand me the cell phone with slightly raised eyebrow and a faint smile that said, ‘you really stepped in it this time.’  With great trepidation I answered in a barely audible voice, ‘Hello.’…

The man at the other end asked if I spoke French.  I told him I didn’t so he continued ...

Paris The City of Lights – A Stay Unlike Any Other

Our grand entrance into the City of Lights was not what we had hoped for.  There’s a traffic control system on the Seine just before the Ile de la Cite.  It is designed to control the commercial barges and tourist vessels around the island where the Notre-Dame Cathedral is located.  Pushed by a strong current we basically ran a red light, and someone called the cops.  They were on top of us faster than you could say, “Sacre ...

Sailing The Canals of Holland

We’ve had more excitement.  I know they weren’t thinking of Rabelo when they built Tilburg’s inner harbor, but give me a break. The Dutch take a small harbor and cut it in half by placing a fountain or sculpture right in the middle of their marinas.  When it was time to depart we found it impossible, because of that damn sculpture, to turn around under our own power.  The strong wind blowing up our stern didn’t help. Personally I thought the ...

Relishing The Netherland’s Floriade | Awaiting Completion of our Barge’s Outfit

We’ve been in The Netherlands for over two weeks, and I’m going crazy.  The Hotel Old Dutch is clean, and the proprietors are delightful, but it certainly isn’t five star.  How do you say basic?

Then there is the problem of money.  I’ve never seen it disappear so fast.  Between Wilco and his six full time employees, and what Lisa and I are spending to outfit Rabelo we might as well be shredding it.  Fortunately it is ...

I’m Going Dutch! These People Have It Figured Out!

That does it. I’m going Dutch. What is with these people?  They are thinner than us. They live longer, smoke like chimneys, and eat everything we’re told not to eat.

Today’s lunch was the last straw.  When it came time to order I asked the waiter to help translate the menu.  He graciously proceeded to explain what each item was, and eventually pointed at something that was supposedly their healthy meal. Feeling unusually virtuous, I ordered the healthy meal without asking ...

We’re Legal To Drive Rabelo! … In Most European Countries…

It’s been a tough week.  All we did was get up, eat breakfast and then head out to shop.  If there were time we’d grab a quick bite for lunch and then back to the stores.  Normally we didn’t eat dinner until after 8:30pm. When we got back to the Hotel Old Dutch we would check our e-mail and then lights out only to repeat the same schedule the next day.

It’s time to take a break.  We are going to ...

OMG! What has Wilco done to my barge?

We arrived in Bergen op Zoom yesterday after a long and arduous trip.  We traveled by boat, car, plane and train. The only mode of transportation we missed was horseback. Which was a good thing because we had almost 300 pounds of luggage, and I would have felt terrible loading all that on a horse.

Wilco has been hard at work tearing apart my Big Baby.  Rabelo was a mess.  There was even a drill press and table saw in the ...

The “Bucket” Sailboat Race | The Greatest Sailing Spectacle on Earth!

Lisa and I are headed back to The Netherlands.  We need to see how the work on Rabelo is coming, and purchase the myriad of items we still require.  But first we are going to St. Barths in the Caribbean where I will be racing on my friend’s sailboat, Symmetry.  This will be the sixth time I’ve had the privilege of racing on Symmetry in the St. Barths Bucket.  While most people have never heard of the “Bucket” it ...

The Cruise Down the Seine into Paris | Dreaming and Reminiscing

I’m back home after a long flight.  I’m told Heathrow is the worst airport in the world to travel through.  Now I understand why.  By the time I got to the Virgin Atlantic Lounge I had less than 30 minutes before my flight departed.  I’d heard that the Virgin Atlantic, Heathrow lounge was pretty amazing, and it is.  Maybe the next time I fly Virgin Atlantic I’ll have a chance to spend some time there.

I just received an ...
