The Cruise Down the Seine into Paris | Dreaming and Reminiscing

I’m back home after a long flight.  I’m told Heathrow is the worst airport in the world to travel through.  Now I understand why.  By the time I got to the Virgin Atlantic Lounge I had less than 30 minutes before my flight departed.  I’d heard that the Virgin Atlantic, Heathrow lounge was pretty amazing, and it is.  Maybe the next time I fly Virgin Atlantic I’ll have a chance to spend some time there.

I just received an ...

How Can We Get Rabelo Out of This Dead End Lock! | The Adventure Continues

It’s 7:00am, and we are on our own now.  Scott is already on his way to the airport. I pour some cold cereal into a bowl.  Scott and his cooking will be sorely missed.

When we are done with breakfast we load Wilco’s car back on deck.  He fixed the crane yesterday so it is working fine now.  Apparently there was an electrical problem in the winch control.

Rabelo heads down the canal, through the set of locks that ...

The Rabelo Has A Captain At Last! The Travel Adventure Continues

We have been forced to move on.  With so much wind it was impossible to dock, and drop off the car.  The red and green street lights are really starting to drive me nuts.  Half the time they look just like the navigation lights on the other barges.  There is nothing worse than all of a sudden seeing a red light, or even worse a green light that looks like it is coming right at you.  Under normal situations ...

Night Sailing With The Rabelo | Adventure Travel Can Get Intense!

It’s been a long day, but we made it to Maastricht.  The fuel dock is empty and waiting for us.  We will have to make a 180-degree turn to dock, but that shouldn’t be a problem.  I slow to a stop, twist the wheel so that the rudder is perpendicular to the direction we were moving, and give the engine a little throttle.  Rabelo easily spins on her own length.  That wasn’t hard at all.  I pull up next ...

Brown Water? This Can’t Be Good | Life On A Barge Is Never Easy…

Today will be a long day.  We left the dock at 7:00am and Wilco is talking about going past Maastricht, Netherlands.  He wants to run until around 2:00am tomorrow morning, over 130 kilometers.  We still plan to fill up in Liege, so that will take about an hour.  I noticed that the water coming out of the sink and in the toilet is a little brown.  I wonder what that could be?

We have made it to Liege without ...

We did it! We’re free!

Scott and I made it back to the boat after another successful trip to the patisserie and market.   Captain Jan was aboard, but Wilco had taken the train back to Bergen op Zoom to get his car. If and when we are able to move we will use Rabelo’s crane to hoist the car on deck, and carry it with us.  Unfortunately I have this feeling that we could be stuck here a long time, but at least we will ...

Caught in the Ice!

This is the second full day we’ve been caught in the ice.  Fortunately we are tied up in front of a lovely home, and not stuck in the middle of the river.  The weather is overcast and dreary with light rain.

There is a long metal pole aboard that Wilco and I use to break the ice around the hull.  It is incredibly hard work, but the only way to free us from the rivers frozen grip. Yesterday we poked and ...

The Not-So-Calm Before The Storm

The big day finally arrived.  It’s time to move Rabelo, but our captain was not on the train he was supposed to be on.  It’s not that Wilco, Scott and I can’t move my big baby.  It’s just that none of us posses the proper license.  Scott just told me that Wilco called.  He’ll wait for the next train.  If Jan, our captain is not aboard we will leave without him.  Without a properly licensed captain Rabelo will be uninsured.

I’m ...

Rabelo is Officially Mine!

Today was a very exciting day. I officially became the owner of a BFB.  For those not familiar with this yachting acronym that would be Big F-ing Boat/barge. Rabelo was built in 1929.  When we pulled the old girl out of the water, before signing the final purchase documents, the surveyor announced that she was in fine shape.   For the past 83 years Rabelo had been maintained as a treasured member of the family.

Introducing Rabelo | The Adventure Begins

Holy shit, what have I done?  It’s four in the morning and I just bought a 127ft. barge.  Not only did I just buy a barge, but the damn thing is in France.

It all started about four months ago.  It was early in the morning.  I had gotten up to use the bathroom, and decided to check my e-mail. Had the owners accepted my offer on Rabelo.
